My abtirsi (Gadabuursi Makahiil & Jibracin)

Postby amal_d » Thu Jun 23, 2011 4:31 pm

Hello everyone,

I just registered yesterday and began adding people to the abtirsi when something seems to have gone wrong technically. So I'll just post them here instead and maybe James can add them?

I'll begin with my mother's abtirsi (Gadabuursi Makahiil). I'm new to this so I'm really confused to be honest. For example: I saw that there's already a Ugaas Roble in the abtirsi and a Ugaas Samatar if I remember correctly. Are they the same people as in my abtirsi (number 4 and 5) or is it just a coincidence? In the abtirsi that's already in the database it says that Ugaas Samatar's father was Ugaas Shirdoon and his father was Ugaas Nuur etc. While my mother's continues with Samatar Saciid, Saciid Sureer and so on. Excuse my ignorance regarding abtirsi...many people just seem to have similar names :)

Here is what my mother tells me:

1. Sheikh Abdirahman Sheikh Nuur (Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheikh_Abd ... heikh_Nuur)
2. Sheikh Nuur Abdullahi Ugaas
3. Abullahi Ugaas
4. Ugaas Roble
5. Roble Samatar
6. Samatar Saciid
7. Saciid Sureer
8. Sureer Adan
9. Adan ?

James, should I add children and wives? I probably know for Sheikh Abdirahman Sheikh Nuur and Sheikh Nuur Abdullahi Ugaas? They had/have a lot of offspring :D

There is definitely more to this. I'll post it later after I've talked to my mother's cousin. She knows more! And if I'm able to find out, I'll post my abtirsi on my father's side. They are also Gadabuursi but Jibracin.

I've talked to my mother's cousin now. And she says it is indeed the abtiris that is already in the database that is correct. So I'll just add mine to it. It goes:

1. Sheikh Abdirahman Sheikh Nuur (Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheikh_Abd ... heikh_Nuur)
2. Sheikh Nuur Abdullahi Ugaas
3. Abullahi Ugaas (they say he had a brother "Ahmed as well" but "Cabdi" became Ugaas. Possibly different mothers)
4. Ugaas Roble (father of Ugaas Cabdi - grandfather of Ugaas Doodi - great-grandfather of Ugaas Rooble - greatgreat-grandfather of the reigning Ugaas Cabdilrashiid)
5. Ugaas Nuur
6. Ugaas Roble
7. Ugaas Samatar
8. Ugaas Shirdoon
9. Ugaas Nuur
10. Ugaas Cabdi
11. Ugaas Cali
12. Makahiil (Dheere)
13. Muuse
14. Makahiil
15. Makadoor
16. Maxamuud (Samaroon)
17. Saciid
18. Daa'uud
19. Xassan
20. Cumar
21. Cali (Gadabuursi)
22. Madaluug
23. Maxamed
24. Xanaftire
25. Maahe
26. Dir
27. Aji
28. Irrir
28. Samaale
30. Xiile ('Il)
31. Abroone (Waalid)
32. Looxaan
33. Kaamil (Xashi)

I think this is correct. Please tell me if I've made any mistakes. It's rather difficult :) I also found out that Ugaas Cali (number 11) is buried in Gabiley (most Ugaas's seem to be) but that Ugaas Samatar (number 7) is buried in Xariirad for some reason.

Looks good to me, I've added Sheikh Cabdiraxmaan here:

I'd love to know more about Gadabursi, by all means
It's great to get details like that about where the Ugas is buried, you wouldn't happen to know if anyone knows the dates when they died would you?

Good! Thank you :D

I know that Sheikh Abdirahman Sheikh Nuur, my maternal grandfather, wrote a book on the history and civilizations of Adal and Somalia called "Il-Bah-Nimadii-Adel-Iyo-Sooyaalkii-Soomaa-lida". It's written in Somali and I've been trying to get my hands on it. I asked around and they said that, surely, I could find the Ugaas's year of death in it and their general biographies. I'll post more when I get it :D

I discovered that the blog http://www.samaroon.wordpress.com has used my grandfathers book as a source on the Ugaas. I figured I can use that for now.

It says about Ugaas Cali (the first Ugaas) in Somali:
Waxaan halkan ku soo bandhigaynaa taxane taariikhiidii Ugaasyada Gadabuursiga, waxaan ka soo guurnay Buugii uu qoray Sheekh Cabdulraxmaan Sheekh Nuur Cabdullaahi. Ugaas Cali waxaa uu ahaa Ugaaskii ugu horeeyay Ugaasyada. Waxaana lagu caleemo saaray ama lagu boqray Gabilay, deeda waxaa la geeyay BAGI sidii caadadu ahayd, halkaas ayaa dharkiisii hore lagaga badalay loona xidhay dharkii boqortooyada. Ugaas Cali wuxuu Ugaasnimada qabtay kolkay taariikhdu ahayd 1607 dii taariikhda Miilaadigu, waxaana ku dhashay meesha la yidhaahdo Dhoobo kolkay taariikhdu ahayd 1575 kii Miilaadiga. Hooyadii waxaa la odhan jiray Khadiija Sheekh waxana ka soo jeeday ama ay ahayd qabiilka la yidhaahdo Aba Yoonis(Gari). Ugaas Cali wuxuu ahaa nin aad wax u yaqaana oo waxaa uu ku xeel dheera Diinta Islaamka, waxaana uu ku bartay Diinta Saylac iyo Herer, Sheekhyadii wax baray waxaa ugu waynaa Sheekh Nuur oo ka mid ah culimadadii xilligaa nooleed kuwii ugu waynaa Sida la sheegay Ugaas Cali waxaa had iyo jeer akhri jiray Kitaabka Quraanka waxaana uu ahaa nin caalim ah oo wixii ay diintu diiday ama wixii dhib ah ka dheeraada. Waxaa kale uu ahaa nin aad u qurux badan, lehna gadh wayn oo haybadi ka muuqato wajigiisa. Sida ay taariikhdu sheegto waxaa jiray Kitaab Quraan ah oo uu Ugaasku ku qoray gacantiisa kaas uu qoray ka dib markii uu qabtay Ugaasninada. Ugaas Cali Ugaas Cali waxaa uu lahaa aftahanimo ilaa xad ah oo hadduu hadlo la wada dhagaysto, wax uu ku hadlano tahay xikmad laga faa’iidaysto. Waxaa uu ahaa nin aad loo adeeco loona maqlo waxa uu ku taliyo, oo haddii uu khilaaf ka dhex jiri beesha dhexdeeda, wax uu ahaa kan isku keen ee loo hogaansamo talada uu bixiyo ee uu yidhaahdo sidaa ayaan ku taliyay ee ha la yeelo. Waxaana uu had iyo jeer ku dadaali jiray in ayna dhicin kala fogaasho soo kala dhexgala ama ku yimaada beesha Gadabuusi ee uu Ugaaska u yahay isga oo adeegsanay Xerrkii ahaa (Gadabuursi bah maaaha ee waa beel). Ugaas Cali waxaa uu geeriyooday markay taarikhdu ahayd 1639 kii Miilaadiga, wuxuuna ku asan yahay Gabilay, oo ilaa imika lagu siyaarto. By Mahdi Qaadi – Colubus Ohio

If I translate the most important parts it says that:
Ugaas Cali was crowned in Gabiley in 1607.
He was born in Dhoobo in 1575.
His mother's name was Khadija Sheekh and she was of the "Aba Yoonis (Gari)" clan.
He was very knowledgeable in the islamic religion. He studied religion in Saylac and Herer.
One of the persons behind his religious training was Sheekh Nuur, who was one of the most important religious scholars of that time.
He was also very beautiful and among his physical traits was his big beard.
There is a Qur'an that was handwritten by him.
He was a great speaker that had the capability to capture everyone's attention.
He died in 1639 and is buried in Gabiley and his grave is still a site for visits.

About the 2nd Ugaas - Ugaas Cabdi Ugaas Cali this time from http://harowo.com/2010/03/09/taxanaha-t ... aas-cabdi/ who uses the same source.

Ugaas Cabdi Ugaas Cali was the son of the previous Ugaas Cali.
He was born in 1609 in "Qabri-Baxar (Dur-Dur Cad)"
His mother's name was Xabiiba Sheekh Suleebaan.
    He was crowned in 1639.
Like his father he was very knowledgeable in the islamic religion.
    He spoke arabic well.
He was not very tall and he had a big beard.
He went through many difficulties as Ugaas and leader of the Gadabuursi, as did much of Somalia at the time. Mainly because of the drought. But there were also some troubles with the Oromo.
Ugaas Cabdi died in 1664 and he is buried in Arraabi (Dooxada Harawe) that is in Arraabi that lies in the Harawe Valley.
All in all, relatively little is known about Ugaas Cabdi and his time as Ugaas.

I was going to post the biography of the 3rd Ugaas. Here on the site his name is: Ugaas Nuur Ugaas Cabdi. But on http://www.samaroon.wordpress.com it says that Ugaas Xuseen Ugaas Cabdi is next in line. It seems like a couple of Ugaas's have been lost. Which is good because now we can solve the problem of the very long years between generations. At least a little. I'll highlight the Ugaas's that are missing from the website:

Name of Ugaas: Year of crowning: Place of crowning:
Ugaas Cali 1639 Saylac
Ugaas Cabdi Ugaas 1639 Saylac
Ugaas Xuseen Ugaas Cabdi 1664 Saylac
Ugaas Cabdile Ugaas Cabdi 1665. Saylac
Ugaas Nuur Ugaas Cabdi 1698 Saylac
Ugaas Hiraab 1733 Saylac
Ugaas shirdoon 1750. Saylac
Ugaas samatar 1772 Saylac
Ugaas Guuleed. 1812. Saylac
Ugaas Rooble 1871. Harawo
Ugaas Nuur Ugaas Rooble 1835. Saylac
Ugaas Rooble ugaas nuur 1888. Saylac
Ugaas Cilmi warfaa 1898 Harawo
Ugaas Cabdi Ugaas rooble. 1938. Harawo
Ugaas Doodi 1948 Harawo
Ugaas Rooble Ugaas Doodi 1952. Harawo
Ugaas Jaamac Muxumed 1960 Harawo
Ugaas C/rashiid Ugaas Rooble. 1985- Current Ugaas (Borama)

In addition, in this list there is no Ugaas Roble that reigned before Ugaas Cabdilrashiid as there is on the website.
Harowo,com (http://harowo.com/2010/03/09/taxanaha-t ... aas-cabdi/) also states a Xuseen as the 3rd Ugaas.

i just realised that they might well be brother and not father-son. In that case the lineage on the site might very well be correct. Sory about that :D .
