Cali Mataan was the first Somali ever to fly and is therefore regarded as a Somali Hero.
The first flight between Xamar to Hargeisa was named "Cali Mataan Airway" in honour of Gen Cali Mataan Xaashi, the first Somali man to fly and the one who personally built and nurtured the Somali airforce.
The late Caydiid mentions in the book he helped write about the important role the General, then a colonel, helped play in the 1969 Somali People's revolution that put president Mohammed Siad Barre in power:
"Lieutenant Colonel Ali Malan Hashii and two other officers of Siad Barre's own Marehan tribe. Besides this, he chose three intellectuals of his tribe, who were secretly working for him in evolving the political system and the future policy." [1]
