The name Sheekhaal or Sheekhaash is an honorary title given to various Somali communities known for their significant role in spreading Islam and producing religious scholars across generations. The word Sheekhaash is derived from Sheekh (meaning "Sheikh" or "religious scholar") and is often used to describe religious communities in regions such as Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, and the Somali region of Ethiopia. In southern Somalia, they are commonly referred to as Sheekhaal, while Sheekhaash is more widely used near the Ethiopian and Djibouti borders.
